Part of the legendary Dodge “Scat Pack”, the 1968 Dodge Charger R/T was the badboy version of a redesign project that resulted in one of the best-looking mid-size cars of the era, the success of which was confirmed when sales rocketed to a six-fold increase over the previous year. Marketed from an anti-establishment angle, the R/T pushed all the right buttons with the go-fast crowd, and it still does today.
The R/T wears its mean streak for all to see, and in this car’s case that streak is wider than usual. Its dark metallic Green flanks are unadorned thanks to a stripe delete on the original order, and the Black vinyl roof and Black interior add to the intimidation factor. Against that dark backdrop, chromed Magnum wheels, competition-style fuel filler cap and twin exhaust tips provide gleaming accents, while inside the straightforward interior, the ever-popular optional console was left off the order sheet in favor of a rare center-mounted “buddy seat”.
The potent 375-horse 440 4-barrel Magnum is backed by Chrysler’s heavy duty 4-speed manual transmission and optional Sure-Grip differential, with all-important matching numbers, and power steering and disc brakes keep it all under control.
Documentation for this Mecum Star 1968 Dodge Charger R/T includes 2 build sheets, the original Chrysler Certicard & Customer Care Warranty book and the original window sticker.
